When Will People Cease Their Fighting?

Author: Constance Cherry Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 When will people cease their fighting? When will armies wage no war, nations conquer not their neighbour, weapons idle, used no more? When will guns and bombs be silent? When will captives be set free? All creation groans in longing for the world's true liberty. 2 Floods and earthquakes, drought and famine plague the world with awesome ill, but far greater is war's horror caused by human, stubborn will. Blest are those who, working, praying, purpose in their hearts to be instruments of peace, committed to the nations' harmony. 3 As we strive for peace with vigour, hoping to be shown the way, we are strengthened in the knowledge of a future, perfect day; for we know that deeper, richer peace is ours when Christ shall reign: then will all our swords be plowshares and God's children free from pain. Now we Bring Our Christmas Treasures

Author: Maria H. Bulfinch Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 14 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Now we bring our Christmas treasures, Loving thoughts and deeds we bring. Child-like hearts we gladly offer To the child, the children's King; To the Child, who, in the manger, Lay upon that Christmas morn, When the angels came to tell us That the children's King was born. 2 And He lives, throughout the ages, Lives and reigns in earth and sky; Angel hosts still sing the glory Of the children's King on high. Yet He cares for children's praises; So, with heart and voice we sing: "Glory in the highest glory To the child, the children's King!" Amen. Topics: Christmas Used With Tune: AUSTRIA

Glorious Is Your Name, Most Holy

Author: Ruth Eliiott Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 9 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Glorious is your name, Most Holy, God and Father of us all; We, your servants, bow before you, Strive to answer every call. You with life's great good have blest us, Cared for us from earliest years; Unto you our thanks we render; Your deep love overcomes all fears. 2 For our world of need and anguish We would lift to you our prayer. Faithful stewards of your bounty, May we with our brothers share. In the name of Christ our Savior, Who redeems and sets us free, Gifts we bring of heart and treasure, That our lives may worthier be. 3 In the midst of time we journey; From your hand comes each new day: We would use it in your service, Humbly, wisely, while we may. So to you, Lord and Creator, Praise and honor we accord! Yours the earth and yours the heavens, Through all time the Eternal Word. Amen. Raise the Psalm: Let Earth Adoring

Author: Edward Churton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 6 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Raise the psalm: let earth adoring, Through each kindred, tribe, and tongue, To her God His praise restoring, Raise the new accordant song. Bless His name, each farthest nation; Sing His praise, His truth display: Tell anew His high salvation, With each new return of day. 2. Tell it out beneath the heaven To each kindred, tribe and tongue, Tell it out from morn till even In your unexhausted song: Tell that God forever reigneth, He, who set the world so fast, He, who still its state sustaineth Till the day of doom to last. 3. Tell them that the day is coming When that righteous doom shall be: Then shall Heav’n new joys illumine, Gladness shine o’er earth and sea. Yea, the far resounding ocean Shall its thousand voices raise, All its waves in glad commotion Chant the fullness of His praise. 4. And earth’s fields, with herbs and flowers, Shall put on their choice array, And in all their leafy bowers Shall the woods keep holy day: When the Judge, to earth descending, Righteous judgment shall ordain, Fraud and wrong shall then have ending, Truth, immortal truth, shall reign. Midnight's Sable Hour Is Passing

Author: Anonymous Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Midnight’s sable hour is passing Lyrics: 1 Midnight’s sable hour is passing, Silence o’er creation reigns; Nature rests in softest slumbers, Stars adorn th’ethereal plains; Now Judea’s gentle shepherds Watch their sleeping fleecy care; When the heavenly portals open, And soft murmurs wake the air. 2 Then behold a glorious angel Down from Heav’n directs his flight; And around the rural watchmen Sheds an overwhelming light; “Hail! ye shepherds! fear no evil, I to you glad tidings bring; Tidings now thro’ Heav’n resounding, Praise to your eternal King. 3 "Go to Bethle’m, David’s city, On this happy, happy morn, Jesus, Lord of men and angels, There for you today is born! Go to Bethlehem; there the Infant In a humble manger laid, Where you find Him there adore Him, To Him endless praise be paid." 4 Heave their hearts with glad emotion, While they listen to his word; When he ceased, a choir of angels Sang mostly sweetly of their Lord; Glory to Jehovah, glory, Glory to Jehovah’s Son; Peace and earth and heav’nly blessing, Man’s redemption is begun! Used With Tune: AUSTRIA Text Sources: Christmas Minstrelsy by Joseph Williams and Henry Gauntlett (London and Mancehster: Novello & Bremner, 1864)
