All Mankind Fell in Adam's Fall

Author: Lazarus Spengler, 1479-1534; Matthias Loy, 1828-1915 Hymnal: Christian Worship #556 (2021) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Justification Lyrics: 1 All mankind fell in Adam's fall; one common sin infects us all. From one to all the curse descends, and over all God's wrath impends. 2 Through all our pow'rs corruption creeps and us in dreadful bondage keeps; in guilt we draw our infant breath and reap its fruits of woe and death. 3 From hearts depraved, to evil prone, flow thoughts and deeds of sin alone; God's image lost, the darkened soul nor seeks nor finds its heav'nly goal. 4 But Christ, the second Adam, came to bear our sin and woe and shame, to be our life, our light, our way, our only hope, our only stay. 5 As by one man all mankind fell and, born in sin, was doomed to hell, so by one Man, who took our place, we all were justified by grace. 6 We thank you, Christ; new life is ours, new light, new hope, new strength, new pow'rs. This grace our ev'ry way attend until we reach our journey's end. Scripture: Genesis 3:19 Languages: English Tune Title: WENN WIR IN HÖCHSTEN NÖTEN SEIN

Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; Richard Massie, 1800-1887 Hymnal: Christian Worship #557 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Justification Lyrics: 1 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, with exultation springing, and with united heart and voice and holy rapture singing, proclaim the wonders God has done, how his right arm the vict'ry won. How dearly it has cost him! 2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay; death brooded darkly o'er me. Sin was my torment night and day; in sin my mother bore me. Yet deep and deeper still I fell; life had became a living hell, so firmly sin possessed me. 3 My own good works availed me naught, no merit they attaining; my will against God's judgment fought, no hope for me remaining. My fears increased till sheer despair left only death to be my share and hell to be my sentence. 4 But God beheld my wretched state before the world's foundation, and, mindful of his mercies great, he planned for my salvation. A father's heart he turned to me, sought my redemption fervently; he gave his dearest treasure. 5 He spoke to his belovèd Son: "It's time to have compassion. Then go, bright jewel of my crown, and bring to all salvation. From sin and sorrow set them free; slay bitter death for them that they may live with you forever." 6 The Son obeyed his Father's will, was born of virgin mother, and, God's good pleasure to fulfill, he came to be my brother. No garb of pomp or pow'r he wore; a servant's form like mine he bore to lead the devil captive. 7 To me he spoke, "Hold fast to me, I am your rock and castle. Your ransom I myself will be; for you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, your friend divine, and evermore you shall be mine; the foe shall not divide us. 8 "The foe will shed my precious blood, me of my life bereaving; all this I suffer for your good; be steadfast and believing. Life will from death the vict'ry win; my innocence shall bear your sin, and you are blest forever. 9 "Now to my Father I depart, the Holy Spirit sending and, heav'nly wisdom to impart, my help to you extending. He will a source of comfort be, teach you to know and follow me, and in all truth will guide you. 10 "What I on earth have lived and taught be all your life and teaching; so shall the kingdom's work be wrought and honored in your preaching. Take care that no one's man-made laws should e'er destroy the gospel's cause; this final word I leave you." Scripture: Romans 3:28 Languages: English Tune Title: NUN FREUT EUCH

Salvation unto Us Has Come

Author: Paul Speratus, 1484-1551 Hymnal: Christian Worship #558 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Justification Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come by God’s free grace and favor; good works cannot avert our doom, they help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, who did for all the world atone; he is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in his law demand and none to him could render caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand for man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not the pure desires the spirit of the law requires, and lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream that God his law had given that sinners could themselves redeem and by their works gain heaven. The law is but a mirror bright to bring the inbred sin to light that lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, sin held its sway unceasing; the task was hopeless and in vain, our guilt was e’er increasing. None can remove sin’s poisoned dart or purify our guileful heart, so deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the law must be fulfilled or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God’s anger stilled, our human nature sharing. He has for us the law obeyed and thus the Father’s vengeance stayed which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made and brought to us salvation, each Christian therefore may be glad and build on this foundation. Your grace alone, dear Lord, I plead your death is now my life indeed, for you have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but truly see your Word cannot be broken; your call rings out, "Come unto me!" No falsehood have you spoken. Baptized into your precious name, my faith cannot be put to shame, and I shall never perish. 8 The law reveals the guilt of sin and makes us conscience-stricken; but then the gospel enters in the sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; the law no peace can ever give, no comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone and rests in him unceasing; and by its fruits true faith is known, with love and hope increasing. For faith alone can justify; works serve our neighbor and supply the proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise to Father, Son, and Spirit, the God who saved us by his grace; all glory to his merit! O triune God in heav’n above, you have revealed your saving love, your blessèd name be hallowed! Scripture: Romans 3:19-28 Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL

If Your Beloved Son, O God

Author: Johann Heermann, 1585-1647 Hymnal: Christian Worship #559 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Justification Lyrics: 1 If your beloved Son, O God, had not to earth descended and in our mortal flesh and blood had not sin's power ended, then this poor, wretched soul of mine in hell eternally would pine because of my transgression. 2 But now I find sweet peace and rest; despair no more reigns o'er me. No more am I by sin oppressed, for Christ has borne sin for me. Upon the cross for me he died that, reconciled, I might abide with you, my God, forever. 3 I trust in him with all my heart; now all my sorrow ceases. His words abiding peace impart; his blood from guilt releases. Free grace thro' him I now obtain; he washes me from ev'ry stain, and pure I stand before him. 4 All righteousness by works is vain; the law brings condemnation. True righteousness by faith I gain; Christ's work is my salvation. His death, that perfect sacrifice, has paid the all-sufficient price; in him my hope is anchored. 5 My guilt, O Father, you have laid on Christ, your Son, my Savior. Lord Jesus, you my debt have paid and gained for me God's favor. O Holy Spirit, fount of grace, the good in me to you I trace; in faith and hope preserve me. Your Works, Not Mine, O Christ

Author: Horatius Bonar, 1808-1889 Hymnal: Christian Worship #560 (2021) Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Topics: Justification Lyrics: 1 Your works, not mine, O Christ, speak gladness to this heart; they tell me all is done. they bid my fear depart. Refrain: To whom but you, who can alone for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? 2 Your blood, not mine, O Christ, can heal my sinful soul; your wounds, not mine, contain the balm that makes me whole. [Refrain] 3 Your cross, not mine, O Christ, has borne the awful load of sins that none could bear but the incarnate God. [Refrain] 4 Your death, not mine, O Christ, has paid the ransom due; ten thousand deaths like mine would have been all too few. [Refrain] 5 Your righteousness, O Christ, alone can cover me; no other righteousness can set a sinner free. [Refrain] Scripture: John 14:6 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. JOHN
