Speros Demetrios Athans

1883 - 1969 Person Name: S. D. Athans, 1883-1969 Author (Spanish version) of "Jesus Is All the World to Me (Cristo es mi dulce Salvador)" in Santo, Santo, Santo Speros Demetrios Athans was born 1883 in Turkey. Raised in the Greek Or­tho­dox Church, Ath­ans left home at age 15, af­ter his fa­ther’s death. He spent two years on the is­land of Cor­fu, Greece, and two more in Egypt, then went to Great Bri­tain, where he worked as a sail­or. In 1903 he went to Am­er­i­ca, and dur­ing im­mi­gra­tion pro­cess­ing, some­one gave him a New Tes­ta­ment in Greek. A year lat­er, he joined a Naz­a­rene church in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois. He then en­rolled in a Bi­ble school and un­i­ver­si­ty. While in school in Ca­li­for­nia, he be­gan to stu­dy Span­ish and to work with the La­ti­no com­mu­ni­ty. In 1910 he de­cid­ed to work in ev­an­gel­ism. In 1931, he joined the Me­thod­ist mis­sion­ary work in La­tin Am­er­i­ca, re­tir­ing in 1949. © The Cyber Hymnal™ (hymntime.com/tch)

1847 - 1909 Author of "Jesus Is All the World to Me" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Will Lamartine Thompson (1847-1909) Born: November 7, 1847, East Li­ver­pool, Ohio. Died: Sep­tem­ber 20, 1909, New York, New York. Buried: Ri­ver­view Cem­e­te­ry, East Li­ver­pool, Ohio. Rebuffed in an ear­ly at­tempt to sell his songs to a com­mer­cial pub­lish­er, Thomp­son start­ed his own pub­lish­ing com­pa­ny. He lat­er ex­pand­ed, open­ing a store to sell pi­an­os, or­gans and sheet mu­sic. Both a lyr­i­cist and com­pos­er, he en­sured he would al­ways re­mem­ber words or mel­o­dies that came to him at odd times: "No mat­ter where I am, at home or ho­tel, at the store or tra­vel­ing, if an idea or theme comes to me that I deem wor­thy of a song, I jot it down in verse. In this way I ne­ver lose it." Thompson took ill dur­ing a tour of Eur­ope, and his fam­i­ly cut short their tra­vels to re­turn home. He died a few weeks lat­er. Verolga Nix

1933 - 2014 Person Name: Verolga Nix, 1933- Arranger of "ELIZABETH" in Songs of Zion Verolga Nix (Apr. 6, 1933-Dec. 9, 2014) Born in Cleveland, Verolga moved with her family at an early age to Philadelphia. She studied for two years at New England Conservatory of Music and then earned a music degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1955. She was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Bennett College in 2000. After retiring from twenty years as a full-time music teacher in Philadelphia public schools she served as minister of music at several churches in Philadelphia, trained and conducted many choirs and served as a seminar leader nationwide. She was a member of Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), National Association of Negro Musicians and the Hymn Society in U.S. and Canada. In 1980 the United Methodist Church asked her to co-edit with J. Jefferson Cleveland the supplemental hymnal Songs of Zion. She published nearly 200 original songs an arrangements. (further details in The Philadelphia Tribune, Dec.19, 2014 obituary).
