T. C. O'Toole

Short Name: T. C. O'Toole
Full Name: O'Toole, T. C., 1928-
Birth Year: 1928

O'Toole, Terrence C. (Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 6, 1928-- ). Roman Catholic. St. Mary's University (Halifax), B.A., 1948; ordination, after study at Holy Heart Seminary, 1952. Pastorates (in Nova Scotia) at Halifax, 1952-1966, 1974-?; Chester, 1966-1970; Lakeside, 1970-1974. While assistant at St. Mary's Basilica he edited, and wrote several hymns for, The Assumption Hymnal (1964), just as vernacular congregational singing was being introduced in his diocese. Among the diocesan hymnals produced during this experimental period, his book has a remarkably high proportion of words and tunes which a congregation can both mean sincerely and sing without strain; yet it had surprisingly little impact on the content of subsequent Catholic hymnbooks authorized for nationwide use.
