The Unseen City

Representative Text

1 There is a city that gleams afar
Where flow’rs are blooming ever;
A city that needs no sun or star,
For God is light forever;
And fairer far its streets that wait
Than rose of song or story,
For through the bars of sunset gates
We almost catch its glory.

Refrain:
O beautiful city unseen,
Where mortal hath never been,
O when we shall stand at Thy gate,
O may it not be too late,
O when we shall stand at Thy gate,
O may it not be too late.

2 O fair the skies that o’er us lean
With radiant splendor shining,
Yet brighter far that land unseen
Beyond our weak divining;
For past the portals of its gates
There is no sin or sorrow,
No weary pathway there awaits,
No long and sad tomorrow. [Refrain]

3 O city fair! O land of bloom!
O realm of radiance tender!
Within that home may we find room,
That home of peace and splendor;
For past the portals of its gates
There is no sin or sorrow,
No weary pathway there awaits,
No long and sad tomorrow. [Refrain]
