In baptism, our identity is established and we are “set apart from all other people and alien religions, that we may wholly belong to [Christ] whose mark and sign we bear” (Belgic Confession, Article 34). Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 26, Question and Answer 70 assures us that “to be washed with Christ’s Spirit means that the Holy Spirit has renewed and sanctified us to be members of Christ…” We therefore are called “to join and unite with it [the church of Christ]” (Belgic Confession, Article 28). This union with Christ shapes our personal identity for all time.

Hymn Story/Background
Originally written in first person singular (“I have put on Christ”) as a congregational response to the act of baptism, this setting changes the text to first person plural (“We have put on Christ), intended for use during a service where there not be someone baptized, but the entire congregation is given an opportunity to affirm their baptismal vows.
The text, based on Galatians 3:27, and the music come from Music for the Rite of Funerals and Rite of Baptism for Children, produced by the International Committee on English in Liturgy Coorporation, a joint commission of Catholic bishops conferences in countries where English is used in celebration of the Sacred Liturgy, with the purpose of translating each of the Latin Liturgical books into English.
