When the blest day of Pentecost

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #H81 (1789) Lyrics: 1 When the blest day of Pentecost Was fully come, the Holy Ghost Descended from above; Sent by the Father and the son, (The sender and the sent are one) The Lord of life and love. 2 But were these first disciples blest With heav'nly gifts? And shall the rest Be pass'd unheeded by? What? Has the Holy Ghost forgot To quicken souls that Christ has bought; And let's them lifeless lie? 3 No, thou almighty Paraclete! Thou shedd'st thy heav'nly influence yet; Thou visit'st sinners still: Thy breath of life, thy quick'ning flame, Thy pow'r, thy Godhead, still the same, We own; because we feel. Whitsunday

Hymnal: Hymns, etc. composed on various subjects #45 (1759) First Line: When the blest day of Pentecost Lyrics: 1. When the blest day of Pentecost Was fully come; the Holy Ghost Descended from above, Sent by the Father and the Son, (The sender and the sent are one) The Lord of life and love. 2. Within one house, with one accord, The faithful followers of our Lord Waiting his promise sit; That vested with supernal Power They might be then, and not before, To preach the gospel fit. 3. Sudden a rushing wind they hear; And fiery cloven tongues appear; It sat on every one. Cloven, perhaps, to be the sign That God no longer would confine His word to Jesus alone. 4. To every nation under heaven To hear the gospel-sound is given; The call to all extends. As ours was parted long ago; So God divides his language too, And after sinners sends. 5. And were these first disciples blest With heavenly gifts? And shall the rest Be passed unheeded by? What! Has the Holy Spirit forgot To quicken souls that Christ has bought; And lets them lifeless lie? 6. No, thou almighty Paraclete; Thou sheddest thy heavenly influence yet; Thou visitest sinners still: Thy breath of life, thy quickening flame, Thy power, thy Godhead, still the same, We own; because we feel. The Day of Pentecost

Author: Hart Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns for Public Worship. In four parts (10th ed.) (Gadsby's Hymns) #715 (1844) Meter: 8.8.6 First Line: When the bless'd day of Pentecost Lyrics: 1 When the blest day of Pentecost Was fully come, the Holy Ghost Descended from above, Sent by the Father and the Son, To bring immortal blessings down, And shed abroad God’s love. 2 Sudden a rushing wind they hear; And fiery cloven tongues appear; And sat on every one; Cloven, perhaps, to be a sign, That God no longer would confine His word to Jews alone. 3 And were these first disciples blessed With heavenly gifts? And shall the rest Be passed unheeded by? What! has the Holy Ghost forgot To quicken souls that Christ has bought, And lets them lifeless lie? 4 No, thou Almighty Paraclete, Thou shedd’st thy heavenly influence yet, Thou visit’st sinners still; The breath of life, thy quickening flame, Thy power, thy Godhead, still the same, We own, because we feel.
