O God, to Us Show Mercy

Hymnal: Psalter Hymnal (Gray) #67 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Lyrics: 1 O God, to us show mercy and bless us in your grace, and cause to shine upon us the brightness of your face, so that your way most holy on earth may soon be known, and unto every people your saving grace be shown. 2 Let all the peoples praise you, let all the nations sing; in every land let praises and songs of gladness ring; for you will judge the peoples in truth and righteousness, and on the earth all nations will your just rule confess. 3 Let all the peoples praise you, let all the nations sing. Then earth in rich abundance to us her fruit will bring. The LORD our God will bless us, our God will blessing send, and all the earth will fear him to its remotest end. When Jesus came to Jordan

Author: F. Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: Common Praise #93 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon, but as his Father's Son. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss; for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the Dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make, this very day invade us, and every bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most: to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost. My Lord, I did not choose you

Author: J. Conder (1789-1855) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #107 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 My Lord, I did not choose you for that could never be; my heart would still refuse you had you not chosen me: you took the sin that stained me, you cleansed me, made me new, for you, Lord, had ordained me that I should live in you. 2 Unless your grace had called me and taught my opening mind, the world would have enthralled me, to heavenly glories blind: my heart knows none above you; for you I long, I thirst, and know that, if I love you, Lord, you have loved me first. Sometimes a Light Surprises

Author: William Cowper Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #159 (1985) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings; it is the Lord, who rises eith healing in his wings; when comforts are declining, he grants the soul again a season of clear shining to cheer it after rain. 2 In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue the theme of God's salvation, and find it ever new; set free from present sorrow we cheerfully can say, e'en let the unknown morrow bring with it what it may. 3 It can bring with it nothing but he will bear us through; who gives the lilies clothing will clothe his people too; beneath the spreading heavens no creature but is fed; Aad he who feeds the ravens will give his children bread. 4 Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit should bear, though all the field should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there, yet God the same abiding, his praise shall tune my voice, for while in him confiding I cannot but rejoice. We pray thee, heavenly Father

Author: Vincent Stuckey Stratton Coles (1845-1929) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #471 (2013) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Lyrics: 1 We pray thee, heavenly Father, to hear us in thy love, and pour upon thy children the unction from above; that so in love abiding, from all defilement free, we may in pureness offer our Eucharist to thee. 2 Be thou our guide and helper, O Jesus Christ, we pray; so may we well approach thee, if thou wilt be the Way: thou, very Truth, hast promised to help us in our strife, food of the weary pilgrim, eternal source of Life. 3 And thou, creator Spirit, look on us, we are thine; renew in us thy graces, upon our darkness shine; that, with thy benediction upon our souls outpoured, we may receive in gladness the body of the Lord. 4 O Trinity of Persons, O Unity most high, on thee alone relying thy servants would draw nigh: unworthy in our weakness, on thee our hope is stayed, and blessed by thy forgiveness we will not be afraid.
