Psalm 147

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 280 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147:7-9 First Line: With songs and honors sounding loud Lyrics: With songs and honors sounding loud, Address the Lord on high; Over the heav'ns he spreads his cloud, And waters veil the sky. He sends his showers of blessing down To cheer the plains below; He makes the grass the mountains crown, And corn in valleys grow. He gives the grazing ox his meat, He hears the raven's cry; But man, who tastes his finest wheat, Should raise his honors high. His steady counsels change the face Of the declining year; He bids the sun cut short his race, And wintry days appear. His hoary frost, his fleecy snow, Descend and clothe the ground; The liquid streams forbear to flow, In icy fetters bound. When from the dreadful stores on high He pours the rattling hail, The wretch that dares this God defy Shall find his courage fail. He sends his word, and melts the snow, The fields no longer mourn; He calls the warmer gales to blow, And bids the spring return. The changing wind, the flying cloud, Obey his mighty word: With songs and honors sounding loud, Praise ye the sovereign Lord. Topics: Children praising God; Creation and Providence; Grace and providence; Providence in air, earth, and sea; Attributes of God; God his being, attributes, and providence; God His perfections; Perfections of God; Providence and grace; Blessings of the country; Praise for rain; Rain from heaven; Seasons of the year; Weather; Psalm for Great Britain; God great and good; Praise for temporal blessings; Compassion of God; Works of creation and providence; Blessings of a nation; Britain's happiness; Spring and winter; Summer and winter; Winter and summer

Psalm 147 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 222 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147 First Line: Praise ye the Lord; 'tis good to raise Lyrics: Praise ye the Lord; 'tis good to raise Our hearts and voices in his praise; His nature and his works invite To make this duty our delight. The Lord builds up Jerusalem, And gathers nations to his name; His mercy melts the stubborn soul, And makes the broken spirit whole. He formed the stars, those heav'nly flames; He counts their numbers, calls their names; His wisdom's vast, and knows no bound, A deep where all our thoughts are drowned. Great is our Lord, and great his might; And all his glories infinite: He crowns the meek, rewards the just, And treads the wicked to the dust. Sing to the Lord, exalt him high, Who spreads his clouds all round the sky; There he prepares the fruitful rain, Nor lets the drops descend in vain. He makes the grass the hills adorn, And clothes the smiling fields with corn; The beasts with food his hands supply, And the young ravens when they cry. What is the creature's skill or force, The sprightly man, the warlike horse, The nimble wit, the active limb? All are too mean delights for him. But saints are lovely in his sight, He views his children with delight; He sees their hope, he knows their fear, And looks, and loves his image there. Topics: Creation and Providence; Grace and providence; Providence in air, earth, and sea; Attributes of God; God his being, attributes, and providence; God His perfections; Perfections of God; Providence and grace; Blessings of the country; Praise for rain; Rain from heaven; Seasons of the year; Weather; Psalm for Great Britain; God great and good; Praise for temporal blessings; Compassion of God; Works of creation and providence; Blessings of a nation; Britain's happiness; Spring and winter; Summer and winter; Winter and summer

Psalm 147 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 39 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147 First Line: O Britain, praise thy mighty God Lyrics: O Britain, praise thy mighty God, And make his honors known abroad, He bid the ocean round thee flow; Not bars of brass could guard thee so. Thy children are secure and blest; Thy shores have peace, thy cities rest; He feeds thy sons with finest wheat, And adds his blessing to their meat. Thy changing seasons he ordains, Thine early and thy latter rains; His flakes of snow like wool he sends, And thus the springing corn defends. With hoary frost he strews the ground; His hail descends with clatt'ring sound: Where is the man so vainly bold That dares defy his dreadful cold? He bids the southern breezes blow; The ice dissolves, the waters flow: But he hath nobler works and ways To call the Britons to his praise. To all the isle his laws are shown, His gospel through the nation known; He hath not thus revealed his word To every land: praise ye the Lord.

O Praise the LORD, for It Is Good

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147:1-13 First Line: O praise the LORD, for it is good to sing unto our God Lyrics: 1 O praise the LORD, for it is good to sing unto our God; 'tis right and pleasant for his saints to tell his praise abroad. The LORD our God builds up his church, finds those who draw apart; he binds their wounds and gently leads, he heals the broken heart. 2 Our Lord is great: he calls by name and counts the stars of night; his wisdom is unsearchable, and wondrous is his might. The LORD upholds the poor and meek but brings the wicked low; sing praise to him who sends the rain, whose care the cattle know. 3 No human might, no earthly pride delights the LORD above; in those who fear him he delights, in those who trust his love. O Zion, praise the LORD your God, his wondrous love confess; he is your glory and your strength, he will your children bless. Psalm 147: Praise ye the Lord; for it is good

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 23 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147 First Line: Praise ye the Lord; for it is good praise to our God to sing Lyrics: 1Praise ye the Lord; for it is good praise to our God to sing: For it is pleasant, and to praise it is a comely thing. 2God doth build up Jerusalem; and he it is alone That the dispers’d of Israel doth gather into one. 3Those that are broken in their heart, and grieved in their minds, He healeth, and their painful wounds he tenderly up-binds. 4He counts the number of the stars; he names them ev’ry one. 5Great is our Lord, and of great pow’r; his wisdom search can none. 6The Lord lifts up the meek; and casts the wicked to the ground. 7Sing to the Lord, and give him thanks; on harp his praises sound; 8Who covereth the heav’n with clouds, who for the earth below Prepareth rain, who maketh grass upon the mountains grow. 9He gives the beast his food, he feeds the ravens young that cry. 10His pleasure not in horses’ strength, nor in man’s legs, doth lie. 11But in all those that do him fear the Lord doth pleasure take; In those that to his mercy do by hope themselves betake. 12The Lord praise, O Jerusalem; Sion, thy God confess: 13For thy gates’ bars he maketh strong; thy sons in thee doth bless. 14He in thy borders maketh peace; with fine wheat filleth thee. 15He sends forth his command on earth, his word runs speedily. 16Hoar-frost, like ashes, scatt’reth he; like wool he snow doth give: 17Like morsels casteth forth his ice; who in its cold can live? 18He sendeth forth his mighty word, and melteth them again; His wind he makes to blow, and then the waters flow amain. 19The doctrine of his holy word to Jacob he doth show; His statutes and his judgments he gives Israel to know. 20To any nation never he such favour did afford; For they his judgments have not known. O do ye praise the Lord.

Author: John Newton (1725-1807) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,634 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147:3 Lyrics: 1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear! It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, and drives away his fear. 2 It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; 'tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest. 3 Dear name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding place, my never-failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace. 4 Jesus, my Shepherd, Husband, Friend, my Prophet, Priest, and King, my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, accept the praise I bring. 5 Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but, when I see thee as thou art, I'll praise thee as I ought. 6 Till then I would thy love proclaim with every fleeting breath; and may the music of thy name refresh my soul in death.
