1 Day by day we magnify Thee,
When our hymns in school we raise;
Daily work begun and ended,
With the daily voice of praise.

2 Day by day we magnify thee
When as each new day is born,
On our knees at home we bless Thee
For the mercies of the morn.

3 Day by day we magnify Thee
In our hymns before we sleep;
Angels hear them, watching by us,
Christ's dear lambs all night to keep.

4 Day by day we magnify Thee
Not in words of praise alone;
Truthful lips and meek obedience
Show Thy glory in Thine own.

5 Day by day we magnify Thee
When, for Jesus' sake, we try,
Every wrong to bear with patience,
Every sin to mortify.

6 Day by day we magnify Thee
Till our days on earth shall cease,
Till we rest from these our labours,
Waiting for Thy Day in peace!

7 Then, on that eternal morning,
With Thy great redeemed host,
May we fully magnify Thee
Father, Son and Holy Ghost!

Author: John Ellerton

John Ellerton (b. London, England, 1826; d. Torquay, Devonshire, England, 1893) Educated at King William's College on the Isle of Man and at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1851. He served six parishes, spending the longest time in Crewe Green (1860-1872), a church of steelworkers and farmers. Ellerton wrote and translated about eighty hymns, many of which are still sung today. He helped to compile Church Hymns and wrote its handbook, Notes and Illustrations to Church Hymns (1882). Day by day we magnify Thee. J. Ellerton. [Praise—-Children's Hymn.] Written to be sung daily at the opening of a National School in Brighton, and published, in 1858, in the author's Hymns for Schools and Bible Classes, from whence it passed into Church Hymns, 1871, Thring's Collectionslightly altered), the Methodist Sunday School Hymn Book, and other hymnals. In the Church Praise Book, N.Y., 1882, stanzas iv.-viii. are given anonymously as No. 93. Original text in Church Hymns, No. 568.
