Sparing not your men and maidens on its downward way;
Rally to the standard of the Captain of Salvation,
Who never lost a battle; He calls for you today.

His army He is ever leading
On to certain victory;
All the host of the world defying,
With the cross-barred banner flying,
Join the mighty army, crying

2 Hear ye! Through the darkness comes the sob of children weeping,
Robbed of health and hope and life, their heritage of love;
Waken from your slumber, ‘tis no time for sinful sleeping,
A Voice to you is calling! The Voice of God above. [Refrain]

3 Forward! God is with us, we are on His pow’r relying,
We shall gain the victory, our cause we know is just;
Forward! Never falter! All the host of sin defying,

Author: C. Austin Miles

Charles Austin Miles USA 1868-1946. Born at Lakehurst, NJ, he attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and the University of PA. He became a pharmacist. He married Bertha H Haagen, and they had two sons: Charles and Russell. In 1892 he abandoned his pharmacy career and began writing gospel songs. At first he furnished compositions to the Hall-Mack Publishing Company, but soon became editor and manager, where he worked for 37 years. He felt he was serving God better in the gospel song writing business, than as a pharmacist.
