Through the night of doubt and sorrow

Author: Bernhardt Severin Ingeman, 1789-1862; Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834-1924 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 325 hymnals Topics: Christian unity; Faith, Trust and Commitment; Hope and Consolation; The Pilgrim Community Lyrics: 1 Through the night of doubt and sorrow onward goes the pilgrim band, singing songs of expectation, marching to the promised land. 2 Clear before us, through the darkness gleams and burns the guiding light; so we march in hope united, stepping fearless through the night. 3 One the light of God's own presence o'er his ransomed people shed, chasing far the gloom and terror, bright'ning all the path we tread. 4 One the object of our journey, one the faith which never tires, one the earnest looking forward, one the hope our God inspires. 5 One the strain that lips of thousands lift as from the heart of one; one the conflict, one the peril, one the march in God begun. 6 One the gladness of rejoicing on the far eternal shore, where the one almighty Father reigns in love for evermore. 7 Onward, therefore, fellow pilgrims, onward with the Cross our aid; bear its shame and fight its battle, till we rest beneath its shade. 8 Soon shall come the great awaking, soon the rending of the tomb; then the scatt'ring of all shadows, and the end of toil and gloom. Scripture: Exodus 13:21 Used With Tune: MARCHING

The love that made us, makes us one, And strangers now are friends. 4 The Spirit of the risen Christ, Unseen, but always near, Is in such friendship better known, Alive among us here. 5 Together met, together bound, By all that God has done, We'll go with joy, to give the world The love that makes us one. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Used With Tune: LAND OF REST

When People Learned of Jesus Christ

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Christian Community Role as teachers following Jesus' model Lyrics: When people learned of Jesus Christ, they came to hear him preach. They longed to find out for themselves what Jesus had to teach. They pondered over parables, and gave his words much thought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He turned the water into wine and multiplied the bread, becalmed the heavy, stormy seas, and even raised the dead. The people wondered at the signs and miracles he wrought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He answered scribes and Pharisees who would with him contend. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and was the sinners' friend. They marveled at his prophecies, the healing that he brought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. We may not work a miracle, fulfill a prophet's role, encourage sinners to repent, or make the wounded whole, but, as disciples, we can tell we've found what all have sought: the never-ending love of God, the love that Jesus taught. Dear God, at home, at work, at school, in all of life, we pray, help us be teachers who reveal your love for us today, that all the world may recognize the spirit that is caught when his disciples try to live the love that Jesus taught. Scripture: Matthew 23:8-10 Used With Tune: DEDICATION

All praise to our redeeming Lord

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-88 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 143 hymnals Topics: Christian Community Lyrics: 1 All praise to our redeeming Lord, who joins us by his grace, and bids us, each to each restored, together seek his face. 2 He bids us build each other up; and gathered into one, to our high calling’s glorious hope, we hand in hand go on. 3 The gift which he on one bestows we all delight to prove; the grace through every vessel flows, in purest streams of love. 4 Even now we think and speak the same, and cordially agree; concentered all, through Jesus’ name, in perfect harmony. 5 We all partake the joy of one, the common peace we feel, a peace to sensual minds unknown, a joy unspeakable. 6 And if our fellowship below in Jesus be so sweet, What height of rapture shall we know When round his throne we meet. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Used With Tune: LUCIUS

Blest Be the Tie

Author: John Fawcett Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 2,337 hymnals Topics: The Church as Community Identity; Christian unity; Church; Fellowship of Believers First Line: Blest be the tie that binds Lyrics: 1 Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. 2 Before our Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. 3 We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear; and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. 4 When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again.
