Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (Guide-moi, Berger fidèle)

Author: Peter Williams; William Williams; Flosette du Pasquier Hymnal: Voices United #651 (1996) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 with repeat Topics: Proper 13 Year B; Proper 13 Year C; Proper 13 Year C Lyrics: 1 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more, feed me till I want no more. 2 Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield, be thou still my strength and shield. 3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side: songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee. There's a Wideness in God's Mercy

Author: Frederick William Faber Hymnal: Voices United #271 (1996) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Proper 13 Year B; Proper 13 Year C Lyrics: 1 There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea; there's a kindness in God's justice which is more than liberty. 2 There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth's failings have such gracious judgement given. 3 There is plentiful redemption in the blood that Christ has shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. 4 Troubled souls, why will you scatter like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander from a love so true and deep? 5 For the love of God is broader than the measures of the mind, and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hearts

Author: Ray Palmer Hymnal: Voices United #472 (1996) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Proper 13 Year B; Proper 13 Year C Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, joy of loving hearts, the fount of life, the light of all from every bliss that earth imparts, we turn, unfilled, to hear your call. 2 Your truth unchanged has ever stood; you plead with all to call on you, to those who seek you, you are good, to those who find you, life is new. 3 We taste your ever-living bread, and long to feast upon you still; we drink of you, the fountainhead, our thirsting souls from you we fill. 4 O Jesus, ever with us stay; make all our moments calm and bright; chase the bleak night of sin away; shed o'er the world your holy light. Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: Franz Joseph Haydn, 1732-1809 Topics: Year B Proper 13 Adapter of "AUSTRIA" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

1809 - 1847 Topics: Proper 13 Year C Harmonizer (chiefly) of "NUN DANKET" in Ancient and Modern Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (b. Hamburg, Germany, 1809; d. Leipzig, Germany, 1847) was the son of banker Abraham Mendelssohn and the grandson of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. His Jewish family became Christian and took the Bartholdy name (name of the estate of Mendelssohn's uncle) when baptized into the Lutheran church. The children all received an excellent musical education. Mendelssohn had his first public performance at the age of nine and by the age of sixteen had written several symphonies. Profoundly influenced by J. S. Bach's music, he conducted a performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829 (at age 20!) – the first performance since Bach's death, thus reintroducing Bach to the world. Mendelssohn organized the Domchor in Berlin and founded the Leipzig Conservatory of Music in 1843. Traveling widely, he not only became familiar with various styles of music but also became well known himself in countries other than Germany, especially in England. He left a rich treasury of music: organ and piano works, overtures and incidental music, oratorios (including St. Paul or Elijah and choral works, and symphonies. He harmonized a number of hymn tunes himself, but hymnbook editors also arranged some of his other tunes into hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Jeremiah Eames Rankin

1828 - 1904 Person Name: Jeremiah E. Rankin Topics: Proper 13 Year A Author of "God Be with You till We Meet Again" in Voices United Pseudonym: R. E. Jeremy. Rankin, Jeremiah Eames, D.D., was born at Thornton, New Haven, Jan. 2, 1828, and educated at Middleburg College, Vermont, and at Andover. For two years he resided at Potsdam, U.S. Subsequently he held pastoral charges as a Congregational Minister at New York, St. Albans, Charlestown, Washington ( District of Columbia), &c. In 1878 he edited the Gospel Temperance Hymnal, and later the Gospel Bells. His hymns appeared in these collections, and in D. E. Jones's Songs of the New Life, 1869. His best known hymn is "Labouring and heavy laden" (Seeking Christ). This was "written [in 1855] for a sister who was an inquirer," was first printed in the Boston Recorder, and then included in Nason's Congregational Hymn Book, 1857. Another of his hymns is "Rest, rest, rest, brother rest." He died in 1904. [Rev. F. M. Bird, M.A.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ======================== Rankin, J. 33., p. 951, ii. Dr. Rankin, b. in N. H. (not New Haven), and received his D.D. 1869, LL.D. 1889 from his Alma Mater. He was President for several years of Howard University, Washington, D.C. His publications included several volumes of Sermons, German-English Lyrics, Sacred and Secular, 1897; 2nd ed. 1898, &c. In addition to his hymns noted on p. 951, ii., he has written and published mainly in sheet form many others, the most important and best-known being:— 1. God be with you till we meet again. [Benediction.] Dr. Rankin's account of this hymn, supplied to us, in common with Mr. Brownlie, for his Hymns and H. Writers of The Church Hymnary, 1899, is: "It was written as a Christian good-bye, and first sung in the First Congregational Church, of which I was minister for fifteen years. We had Gospel meetings on Sunday nights, and our music was intentionally of the popular kind. I wrote the first stanza, and sent it to two gentlemen for music. The music which seemed to me to best suit the words was written by T. G. Tomer, teacher of public schools in New Jersey, at one time on the staff of General 0. 0. Howard. After receiving the music (which was revised by Dr. J. W. Bischoff, the organist of my church), I wrote the other stanzas." The hymn became at once popular, and has been translated into several languages. In America it is in numerous collections; and in Great Britain, in The Church Hymnary, 1898, Horder's Worship Song, 1905, The Methodist Hymn Book, 1904, and others. It was left undated by Dr. Rankin, but I.D. Sankey gives it as 1882. 2. Beautiful the little hands. [Little ones for Jesus.] Given without date in Gloria Deo, New York, 1900. Dr. Rankin's translations include versions of German, French, Latin, and Welsh hymns. His contributions to the periodical press have been numerous. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)
