Israel's Rebellion and Punishment; or, the Sins and Chastisements of God's People

Appears in 27 hymnals Topics: Education religious; Religious Education; Education religious; Religious Education First Line: Oh what a stiff rebellious house Lyrics: 1 Oh what a stiff rebellious house Was Jacob's antient race! False to their own most solemn vows, And to their Maker's grace. 2 They broke the covenant of his love, And did his laws despise, Forgot the works he wrought to prove His power before their eyes. 3 They saw the plagues on Egypt light From his avenging hand: What dreadful tokens of his might Spread o'er the stubborn land. 4 They saw him cleave the mighty sea, And march'd in safety through, With watery walls to guard their way, 'Till they had 'scap'd the foe. 5 A wondrous pillar mark'd the road, Compos'd of shade and light; By day it prov'd a sheltering cloud, A leading fire by night. 6 He from the rock their thirst supply'd; The gushing waters flow'd, And ran in rivers by their side, Along the desert road. 7 Yet they provok'd the Lord most high, And dar'd distrust his hand; "Can he with bread our host supply "Amidst this desert land?" 8 The Lord with indignation heard, And caus'd his wrath to flame: His terrors ever stand prepar'd To vindicate his name. Scripture: Psalm 78

Psalm 78 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 180 hymnals Topics: Education religious; Religious Education First Line: Let children hear the mighty deeds Lyrics: Let children hear the mighty deeds Which God performed of old, Which in our younger years we saw, And which our fathers told. He bids us make his glories known, His works of power and grace; And we'll convey his wonders down Through every rising race. Our lips shall tell them to our sons, And they again to theirs; That generations yet unborn May teach them to their heirs. Thus shall they learn in God alone Their hope securely stands; That they may ne'er forget his works, But practise his commands. Scripture: Psalm 78

Psalm 78 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 25 hymnals Topics: Education religious; Religious Education First Line: When Isr'el sins, the Lord reproves Lyrics: When Isr'el sins, the Lord reproves And fills their hearts with dread; Yet he forgives the men he loves, And sends them heav'nly bread. He fed them with a lib'ral hand, And made his treasures known; He gave the midnight clouds command To pour provision down. The manna, like a morning shower, Lay thick around their feet The corn of heav'n, so light, so pure, As though 'twere angels' meat. But they in murm'ring language said, "Manna is all our feast; We loathe this light, this airy bread; We must have flesh to taste." "Ye shall have flesh to please your lust," The Lord in wrath replied, And sent them quails like sand or dust, Heaped up from side to side. He gave them all their own desire, And greedy as they fed, His vengeance burnt with secret fire, And smote the rebels dead. When some were slain, the rest returned And sought the Lord with tears; Under the rod they feared and mourned, But soon forgot their fears. Oft he chastised and still forgave, Till, by his gracious hand, The nation he resolved to save Possessed the promised land. Scripture: Psalm 78

Appears in 60 hymnals Topics: Religious Education First Line: I'll bless the Lord from Day to Day Lyrics: 1 I'll bless the Lord from Day to Day; How good are all his Ways! Ye humble Souls that use to pray, Come, help my Lips to praise. 2 Sing to the Honour of his Name, How a poor Suff'rer cry'd, Nor was his Hope expos'd to Shame, Nor was his Suit deny'd. 3 When threat'ning Sorrows round me stood, And endless Fears arose, Like the loud Billows of a Flood, Redoubling all my Woes; 4 I told the Lord my sore Distress, With heavy Groans and Tears; He gave my sharpest Torments ease, And silenc'd all my Fears. Pause: 5 [O Sinners, come and taste his Love, Come, learn his pleasant Ways, And let your own Experience prove The Sweetness of his Grace. 6 He bids his Angels pitch their Tents Round where his Children dwell; What Ills their heav'nly Care prevents No earthly Tongue can tell.] [7 O love the Lord, ye Saints of his; His Eye regards the Just; How richly blest their Portion is Who make the Lord their Trust! 8 Young Lions, pinch'd with Hunger roar And famish in the Wood; But GOD supplies his holy Poor With ev'ry needful Good.] Scripture: Psalm 34:1-10

Children, in years or knowledge young

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 67 hymnals Topics: Religious Education Lyrics: 7 Children, in years and knowledge young, Your parents’ hope, your parents’ joy, Attend the counsels of my tongue, Let pious thoughts your minds employ. 8 If you desire length of days, And peace to crown your mortal state, Restrain your feet from impious ways, Your lips from slander and deceit. 9 The eyes of God regard his saints, His ears are open to their cries; He sets his frowning face against The sons of violence and lies. 10 To humble souls and broken hearts God with his grace is ever nigh; Pardon and hope his love imparts When men in deep contrition lie. 11 He tells their tears, he counts their groans, His Son redeems their souls from death; His spirit heals their broken bones, His praise employs their tuneful breath. Psalm 78 Part 4

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals Topics: Education religious; Religious Education First Line: Great God, how oft did Isr'el prove Lyrics: Great God, how oft did Isr'el prove By turns thine anger and thy love! There in a glass our hearts may see How fickle and how false they be. How soon the faithless Jews forgot The dreadful wonders God had wrought! Then they provoke him to his face, Nor fear his power, nor trust his grace. The Lord consumed their years ill pain, And made their travels long and vain; A tedious march through unknown ways Wore out their strength, and spent their days. Oft when they saw their brethren slain They mourned, and sought the Lord again; Called him the Rock of their abode, Their high Redeemer, and their God. Their prayers and vows before him rise As flatt'ring words or solemn lies, While their rebellious tempers prove False to his cov'nant and his love. Yet did his sovereign grace forgive The men who not deserved to live; His anger oft away he turned, Or else with gentle flame it burned. He saw their flesh was weak and frail, He saw temptations still prevail; The God of Abram loved them still, And led them to his holy hill. Scripture: Psalm 78:32-72

Come, Children, learn to fear the Lord

Appears in 52 hymnals Topics: Religious Education Lyrics: 1 Come, Children, learn to fear the Lord And that your Days be long, Let not a false or spiteful Word Be found upon your Tongue. 2 Depart from Mischief, practise Love, Pursue the Works of Peace; So shall the Lord your Ways approve, And set your Souls at Ease. 3 His Eyes awake to guard the Just, His Ears attend their Cry; When broken Spirits dwell in Dust, The GOD of Grace is nigh. 4 What tho' the Sorrows here they taste Are sharp and tedious too, The Lord who saves them all at last, Is their Supporter now. 5 Evil shall smite the Wicked dead; But GOD secures his own, Prevents the Mischief when they slide, Or heals the broken Bone. 6 When Desolation, like a Flood, O'er the proud Sinner rolls, Saints find a Refuge in their God, For he redeem'd their Souls. Scripture: Psalm 34:11-22
