O the Depth of Love Divine

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 7 hymnals First Line: O the depth of love divine, th'unfathomable grace Lyrics: 1. O the depth of love divine, th’unfathomable grace! Who shall say how bread and wine God into us conveys! How the bread His flesh imparts, how the wine transmits His blood, Fills His faithful people’s hearts with all the life of God! 2. Let the wisest mortals show how we the grace receive; Feeble elements bestow a power not theirs to give. Who explains the wondrous way, how through these the virtue came? These the virtue did convey, yet still remain the same. 3. How can spirits heavenward rise, by earthly matter fed, Drink herewith divine supplies and eat immortal bread? Ask the Father’s wisdom how: Christ who did the means ordain; Angels round our altars bow to search it out, in vain. 4. Sure and real is the grace, the manner be unknown; Only meet us in thy ways and perfect us in one. Let us taste the heavenly powers, Lord, we ask for nothing more. Thine to bless, ’tis only ours to wonder and adore. Used With Tune: BARNABAS Text Sources: Hymns on the Lord's Supper, 1745, number 57

O Exalt and Praise the Lord

Author: Petrus Herbert, -1571; Frederick William Foster, 1760-1835 Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O exalt and praise the Lord, Laud His Name forevermore, Gratefully with one accord With the angels Him adore; Thank Him for the faithfulness Wherewith He His witnesses, Who in heaven are perfected, Through great tribulation led. 2 May we always have in view The example of our Lord, Faithfully His steps pursue, Giving heed unto His word; May we tread the narrow path, Not unfruitful in the faith, And unto the end endure, Making our election sure. 3 Let us call to mind with joy Those who have before us gone, Who obtained the victory Through the blood of Christ alone; That we all may zealously Imitate their constancy, Till we too the prize receive And with them in glory live. Christ, Thy All-Atoning Death

Author: Nicholas L. von Zinzendorf, 1700-1760; Philip Henry Molther, 1714-1780 Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: Christ, Thine all-atoning death Lyrics: 1 Christ, Thine all-atoning death Is our life while here below; Strengthen Thou our feeble faith, Constantly Thine aid bestow. In thy mercy we confide; Safely to the end us guide; Zion, if thy Head depart, Void of life and strength thou art. 2 Gracious Lord, may we believe, Venture all on Thy free grace, Boldly things not seen achieve, Trusting in Thy promises. Faith Thy people’s stronghold is; Their employment daily this, To proceed on paths unknown, Leaning on Thine arm alone. 3 Lord, Thy body ne’er forsake, Ne’er Thy congregation leave; We to Thee our refuge take, Of Thy fullness we receive; Every other help be gone, Thou art our Support alone; For on Thy supreme commands All the universe depends.
