1 Accorde-moi, Seigneur!
De chanter tes louanges!
Mets en mon cœur le feu
Qui brûle au cœur des anges.
Moi mortel, moi pécheur,
Je désire, ô mon Dieu!
De ce terrestre lieu
Jusqu’en ton sanctuaire,
T’adresser en mes chants,
T’adresser en mes chants
Ma fervente prière.

2 Qu’ils sont grands et profonds
Les trésors de ta grâce!
Elle bénit toujours
Et jamais ne se lasse.
Avant que le temps fût,
Oui, dès l’éternité,
Seigneur! ta charité
Prépara l’héritage
Qui des pécheurs sauvés,
Qui des pécheurs sauvés,
Doit être le partage.

3 Mais, ô Dieu! quel mystère
Auguste, impénétrable,
Enveloppe à mes yeux
Cet amour ineffable!
Il surpasse, il étonne,
Il confond mon esprit,
Devant toi, Jésus-Christ!
Fils unique du Père,
Qui demeures au ciel,
Qui demeures au ciel,
Et qui viens sur la terre!

4 La lumière a donc lui
Dans cette nuit profonde,
Dans cette nuit de mort,
Qui pesait sur le monde!
Le ciel est révélé:
Dieu n’est plus inconnu.
Lui-même, il est venu,
Et l’invisible vie
A des enfants d’Adam
A des enfants d’Adam
Pour toujours est unie!

5 Oh! que sont mes pensers,
Qu’est mon faible langage
Pour sonder cet amour
Et pour lui rendre hommage!
Je suis vivant par lui:
Mais je suis un pécheur!
Devant toi donc, Seigneur!
Adorant ta clémence,
Je reste prosterné,
Je reste prosterné
Dans un humble silence.

Rv Henri Abraham Cesar Malan, 1787-1864. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, into a bourgeois family that moved to Switzerland to escape religious persecution during the French Revolution, he attended the university in Marseilles, France, intending to become a businessman. Although having some grounding in religious faith by his mother, he decided to attend the Academy at Geneva (founded by Calvin) in preparation for ministry. He was ordained in 1810, after being appointed a college master (teaching Latin) in 1809. Malan was in accord with the National Church of Geneva as a Unitarian, but the Reveil Movement caused him to become a dissident (evangelical) instead of a proponent of the Reformed Church (believing works, not faith, was what mattere… Go to person page >
