George Moses Horton was a slave owned by James Horton, Clatham County, North Carolina. His poetry was collected in a pamphlet and printed by Weston R. Gales of Raleigh, North Carolina in 1829 in the hopes that people would make contributions to free George so that he could sail to Liberia. The second edition was published in 1837 in Philadelphia with a note that George M. Horton was still a slave of James Horton. In Freedom's Lyre (1840) George Mose Horton's poetry is credited to his enslaver, James Horton. Dianne Shapiro Go to person page >
