As a young man, he worked as a machinist. He graduated from Eureka College, Eureka, Illinois, in 1878, and pastored in Normal, Washburn, Petersburg and Springfield, Illinois; Des Moines, Iowa; Covington, Kentucky; and San Antonio, Texas.
