Representative Text

1 Come, Holy Ghost, in faith us teach
To love none but our Saviour
From all our heart, with all our might,
And thus to serve him ever,
That we, 'gainst death, our fiercest foe,
Find shelter in His wounds, and so
Be rescued by His merit.

2 Grant that Thy wholesome doctrine's power
May be our dearest treasure,
And let Thy word, the bread of life,
Help us to heaven's pleasure.
Yea, let us die to every sin,
Revive the life of faith again,
To bear fruit of the Spirit.

3 When life and breath depart from us
In death's last awful hour,
Oh! may our hearts then realize
The working of Thy power;
That we into our Saviour's hand
With conscious trust our souls commend,
To gain rest everlasting.

Bartholomew Ringwaldt was born at Frankfort-on-the-Oder, in 1530, and was a Lutheran pastor at Langfield, in Prussia, where he died, 1598. His hymns resemble Luther's in their simplicity and power. Several of them were written to comfort himself and others in the sufferings they endured from famine, pestilence, fire and floods. In 1581, he published "Hymns for the Sundays and Festivals of the whole Year." --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872.… Go to person page >
