Representative Text

1 Cradled in a manger,
On the fragrant hay,
Wrapped in peaceful slumber,
Baby Jesus lay.

Refrain:
Slumber, sweetly slumber,
While angels hover near,
Slumber, sweetly slumber,
Thou Thought of God so dear.
Slumber on, slumber on,
Thou Holy Babe.

2 Happy be Thy slumbers,
While sweet lullabies,
Sung by shining angels,
Echo through the skies. [Refrain]

3 Sleep, dear baby Jesus,
Love shall make the night
Full of joy and gladness,
Bright with heaven’s light. [Refrain]

Author: Lizzie DeArmond

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
