1 Det snart forvist paa tiden er,
At Krist guds Søn, skal komme
I Skyerne med Engle-Færd
Til Frelse for de Fromme;
Stor Skræk skal være du forsand,
Naar al Ting smeltes bort i Brand,
Som Peder derom melder.

2 Basunen skal man høre gaa
Med Engles Raab og Stemmer,
De Døde skulle da opstaa
Med Legem og med Lemmer,
Som hver har havt i Verden her;
Men hvo enda i Live er,
Skal i en Hast forandres.

3 Dernæst de Bøger lades op,
Hvorinden staar beskrevet,
Hvad som enhver med Sjæl og Krop
Paa Jorden har bedrevet;
Der ingen da sin Skyld fragaar,
Samvittigheden alle slaar
Og hver sin Synd beviser.

4 O Ve da den, i syndig Id
Sit Levnet har forkæret,
Og ikke her i Naadens Tid
Guds Ord og Lemmer æret!
Den meget ilde da bestaar,
til Helvede med Satan gaar
Fra Gud til evig Plage,

5 O Jesus, hjælp i samme Stund
Alt for din Død og Pine,
Drag mig herud af Syndens Bund,
Og sæt mig der blandt dine!
Derpaa jeg tror og Tvil er bær,
Thi du selv, min Gjenløser kjær,
Har al min Skyld betalet.

6 Bær derfor du min Talsmand god,
Min Synd mig ei tilregne,
Og rens mig med dit dyre Blod,
Din Værdskyld mig tilegne,
At jeg samt alle Kristne maa
I Himmelen med dig indgaa
Til Gud i evig Glæde!

7 O Jesus, for din bitre Død
Og for din Angst og Smerte,
Hjælp mig udi min sidste Nød,
giv Troen i mit Hjerte,
At jeg herfra maa skilles saa,
Jeg Salighed maa hisset faa
Hos dig i Himmerige1

8 Hvi tøver du, Herre Jesus kjær,
At komme hid til Dommen,
De sande Kristne plages her
Og vente paa din Kommen!
Kom dog, kom dog, o Dommer blid,
Gjær Ende paa al syndig Id
Og paa al Jammer! Amen.

Author: Thomas, of Celano

Thomas of Celano was born at Celano in the Abruzzi, and joined St. Francis of Assisi c. 1214. He was commissioned by Gregory IX to write the life of St. Francis: the First Legend, 1229; the Second Legend, 1247; and the Tract on the Miracle of St. Francis a few years later. His Legend of St. Clare was composed in 1255. He was probably among the first band of friars to visit Germany, 1221. --The Hymnal 1940 Companion… Go to person page >

Bartholomew Ringwaldt was born at Frankfort-on-the-Oder, in 1530, and was a Lutheran pastor at Langfield, in Prussia, where he died, 1598. His hymns resemble Luther's in their simplicity and power. Several of them were written to comfort himself and others in the sufferings they endured from famine, pestilence, fire and floods. In 1581, he published "Hymns for the Sundays and Festivals of the whole Year." --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872.… Go to person page >

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >
