Gud Faders Søn enbaarne

Representative Text

1 Guds Faders Søn enbaarne
Af Evighedens Aar,
Den af hans Hjerte kaarne
Til sødest Frelser vor,
Han er den Morgenstjerne,
Oplyser os saa gjerne
Med sit Miskundheds Ord.

2 For os et Menn'ske vorden
I sidst Verdens Tid,
Tvert mod Naturens Orden
Fødd af en Jomfru bild,
Han Djævelen har lænket,
Os Himmerige stjænket,
Alt med dit evig' Liv.

3 O Kristus, du os give,
Vi maatte ret forstaa,
I kristen Tro forblive,
Og dig nu tjene saa,
Vort Hjerte maatte smage
Din Sødhed alle Dage,
Og tørste dig at faa!

4 Du stande skal for Styre
Med Guddoms Magt paa Jord,
Og raader alt med dyre
Og stærke Guddoms Ord:
Dit Lys i os optænde,
Vort Hjerte til dig vende,
Og sluk vor Vantro stor!

5 Du tugte os i Naade,
Styrk os i Troen saa,
At fri fra Helveds Vaade
Guds Børn vi blive maa,
At vi her aldrig mere
End Kristi Ord begjære,
Falsk Lærdom plat forsmaa!

6 Lad alle Synder slukne,
Tag Ondskab af vor Hu,
Den gamle Adam drukne,
Den ny maa leve nu!
At ind til dig vi stræve,
Os selv ei længer leve,
Men lev i os kun du!

Author: Elisabeth Creutziger

Cruciger, Elisabethe, née von Meseritz, was the daughter of a family belonging to the Polish nobility. Her parents, suffering from the persecutions of these times, had been forced to seek refuge at Wittenberg There, in May or June, 1524, she was married to Caspar Cruciger, son of a Leipzig burgess, who had enrolled himself as a student at Wittenberg in 1522. Cruciger, who was treated by Luther as his own son and accounted his most hopeful pupil, became in 1525 Rector of St. John’s School and preacher in St. Stephen's Church, Magdeburg; and in 1528 was called to become professor in the philosophical faculty at Wittenberg, but, by Luther's wish, was appointed one of the professors of Theology. Of his wife, who died at Wittenberg, May, 1535… Go to person page >

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >
