During our last fund drive a donor said this: "Covid-19 rules prevent us from singing during my husband's burial service, so we will play the tune while we read the printed words or hum along with the music." Needless to say, this testimony struck us and stuck with us. We never know on any given day how Hymnary.org will be a blessing to people, but we know that around the world, the site is making a powerful difference in the lives of many.

Thanks to all who use Hymnary.org and all who support it with gifts of time, talent and treasure. If you feel moved to support our work today with a gift of any amount and a word of encouragement, we would be grateful.

What though my joys and comfort die?
The Lord my savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.

Herre, hvor skal vi gaa hen

Representative Text

1 Herre, hvor skal vi gaa hen?
Gaa fro dig, vor Sjaleven,
Fra den levende Guds Søn,
Fra vor Troes store Løn,
Fra den Eneste paa Jord,
I hvis Mund er Livets Ord!

2 Nei, om end det inder haardt,
Ei dit Ord os skræmmer bort;
Dybt vi føle, at paa Jord
Døden er det haarde Ord;
Men dit Ord er Liv og Aand,
Sprænger alle Dodens Baand.

3 Æd mit Kjød og drik mit Blod,
Siger Livets Fyrste god,
Paa mit Ord i Brød og Vin!
Da for dig for Døden min,
Da, opreist af forten Jord,
Jeg for dig til Himmels for.

4 Hør det, Hjerte, hvor du slaar
I mit Bryst med bange Kaar!
Tro vor Herre paa hans Ord,
Nyd ham ved hans Naadebord!
Æd hans Kjød og drik hans Blod,
Og staa op, som han opstod!

5 Ja, tag Sandheds Ord i Pant,
Hans, som Døden overvandt,
Da i Aanden alt du har
Syn paa Herlighede klar,
Smoger, hvad end brydes ned,
Aldrig Dødens Bitterhed.

6 Evig da i Glæde stor
Leve skal vi med Guds Ord,
Som, naar Verden bradt forgaar,
Salig, seierrig bestaar,
Deler mildt sin Guddoms Glans
Med alt Jordisk, som er hans.

Nicolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig was the son of a pastor, and was born at Udby, in Seeland, in 1783. He studied in the University of Copenhagen from 1800-1805; and, like some other eminent men, did not greatly distinguish himself; his mind was too active and his imagination too versatile to bear the restraint of the academic course. After leaving the university he took to teaching; first in Langeland, then (1808) in Copenhagen. Here he devoted his attention to poetry, literature, and Northern antiquities. In 1810 he became assistant to his father in a parish in Jutland. The sermon he preached at his ordination, on the subject "Why has the Lord's word disappeared from His house," attracted much attention, which is rarely the case with "pro… Go to person page >
