Representative Text

1 It is all very well that the cross we should bear,
For the toil we’re repaid with inheritance there;
For the way of the cross is the way to the crown:
When we take up the crown, then the cross we lay down.

2 It is all very well that with trials we’re blest,
And prepared to enjoy the sweet blessings of rest.
For like gold we are tried, and the dross all consumed,
Our souls purified, and our bodies entombed.

3 It is all very well e’en tho’ death too may come,
For the vict’ry is ours o’er the grave and the tomb.
For the clods of the valley in mercy are riv’n,
And Jesus invites us and guides us to Heav’n.
