1 Jesus, before Thy face we fall—
Our Lord, our life, our hope, our all!
For we have nowhere else to flee—
No sanctuary, Lord, but Thee!

2 In Thee we ev’ry glory view,
Of safety, strength, and beauty too:
‘Tis all our rest and peace to see
Our sanctuary, Lord, in Thee!

3 Whatever foes or fears betide,
In Thy blest presence we may hide;
And while we rest our souls on Thee,
Thou wilt our Sanctuary be!

4 Thor’ time, with all its changing scenes,
Thro’ all the grief that intervenes,
This shall support each fainting heart—
That Thou our Sanctuary art!

Medley, Samuel, born June 23, 1738, at Cheshunt, Herts, where his father kept a school. He received a good education; but not liking the business to which he was apprenticed, he entered the Royal Navy. Having been severely wounded in a battle with the French fleet off Port Lagos, in 1759, he was obliged to retire from active service. A sermon by Dr. Watts, read to him about this time, led to his conversion. He joined the Baptist Church in Eagle Street, London, then under the care of Dr. Gifford, and shortly afterwards opened a school, which for several years he conducted with great success.
