Representative Text

1 "Kvinna, sjaa di Tru er stor.
Som du vil, det gange!"
Fraa det rike Naadens ord
Strøymer Livsens Ange.
Det var Herrens Ord ein Gong
Til ei Heidning-Kvinna,
Som, so langt der ljodar Song,
Stødt skal Hjarta vinna.

2 Det er stendig Herrens Ord,
Sagt til Hjarto saare,
Der han ser ei Tru so stor
Til hans Augo klaare.
Gjerna han dein likna maa
Med dei vesle Hundar:
Berre etter Smular smaa
Fraa hans Bord dei stundar.

3 Av det sæle Himmelbrand
Kann dei minste Krumar
Giva Lækjedom fyr Daud,
Saad til evig Sumar.
Naar det gjeng, som Hjartat vil,
Som er Livsens Aare,
Daa er Dauden ikkje til,
Berre Liv og Klaare.

4 Livet eig vaar Frelsarmann,
Dauden inkje skoder;
Liv og Gleda lovar han
Evig hjaa sin Fader.
Sjølv han er og Livsens Braud:
Vil du mot det taka,
Skal du, naar du vel er daud,
Herrens Gleda smaka.

After leaving the university he took to teaching; first in Langeland, then (1808) in Copenhagen. Here he devoted his attention to poetry, literature, and Northern antiquities. In 1810 he became assistant to his father in a parish in Jutland. The sermon he preached at his ordination, on the subject "Why has the Lord's word disappeared from His house," attracted much attention, which is rarely the case with "pro… Go to person page >
