1 My song shall bless the Lord of all,
My praise shall climb to his abode;
Thee, Savior, by that name I call,
The great Supreme, the mighty God.

2 Without beginning or decline,
Object of faith, and not of sense;
Eternal ages saw Him shine,
He shines eternal ages hence.

3 As much, when in the manger laid,
Almighty ruler of the sky,
As when the six day's work he made
Fill'd all the morning-stars with joy.

4 Of all the crowns Jehovah bears,
Salvation is the dearest claim;
That gracious sound well pleas'd he hears,
And owns Immanuel for his name.

5 A cheerful confidence I feel,
My well-plac'd hopes with joy I see;
My bosom glows with heavenly zeal
To worship him who died for me.

Author: William Cowper

William Cowper (pronounced "Cooper"; b. Berkampstead, Hertfordshire, England, 1731; d. East Dereham, Norfolk, England, 1800) is regarded as one of the best early Romantic poets. To biographers he is also known as "mad Cowper." His literary talents produced some of the finest English hymn texts, but his chronic depression accounts for the somber tone of many of those texts. Educated to become an attorney, Cowper was called to the bar in 1754 but never practiced law. In 1763 he had the opportunity to become a clerk for the House of Lords, but the dread of the required public examination triggered his tendency to depression, and he attempted suicide. My song shall bless the Lord of all. W. Cowper. [The Godhead of Christ.] First published in the Olney Hymns, 1779, Book ii., No. 38, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines, and headed "Jehovah Jesus." Although not in extensive use, it is a dogmatic hymn of more than usual merit, and is worthy of greater attention.
