1 On the resurrection morning
Soul and body meet again;
No more sorrow, no more weeping,
No more pain.

2 Here awhile they must be parted,
And the flesh its sabbath keep,
Waiting in a holy stillness,
Wrapt in sleep.

3 For a space that tired body
Lies with feet toward the dawn;
Till there breaks the last and brightest
Easter morn.

4 But the soul in contemplation
Utters earnest prayers and strong;
Breaking at the resurrection
Into song.

5 Soul and body reunited,
Thenceforth nothing will divide,
Waking up in Christ's own likeness,
Satisfied.

6 Oh, the beauty, oh, the gladness
Of that resurrection-day!
Which shall not through endless ages,
Pass away!

7 On that happy Easter morning
All the graves their dead restore,
Father, sister, child and mother,
Meet once more.

8 To that brightest of all meetings,
Bring us, Jesus Christ, at last;
To Thy cross, through death and judgment,
Holding fast.

Amen.

Baring-Gould, Sabine, M.A., eldest son of Mr. Edward Baring-Gould, of Lew Trenchard, Devon, b. at Exeter, Jan. 28, 1834, and educated at Clare College, Cambridge, B.A. 1857, M.A. 1860. Taking Holy Orders in 1864, he held the curacy of Horbury, near Wakefield, until 1867, when he was preferred to the incumbency of Dalton, Yorks. In 1871 he became rector of East Mersea, Essex, and in 1881 rector of Lew Trenchard, Devon. His works are numerous, the most important of which are, Lives of the Saints, 15 vols., 1872-77; Curious Myths of the Middle Ages, 2 series, 1866-68; The Origin and Development of Religious Belief, 2 vols., 1869-1870; and various volumes of sermons. On the Resurrection morning. S. Baring-Gould. [Death and Burial.] Appeared in H. J. Palmer's Supplementary Hymnal, 1866, No. 77, in 8 stanzas of 4 lines; Thring's Collection, 1882; the Supplemental Hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1889; the Hymnal Companion. (with slight alterations by the author), and many others. It is one of the author's most popular hymns.
