One Night as I Lay Dreaming

Representative Text

1 One night as I lay dreaming
Of the days now past and gone,
My tho’ts ran back to childhood,
To a quiet country home.
‘Mid years of careless wand’ring
I had sought my home once more;
There I heard my mother singing
Strains of songs she sang before.

Ask the Savior to help you;
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you thro.

2 Tho’ I was only dreaming,
Her sweet voice I heard in song,
And then I saw her kneeling
For her boy that had gone wrong;
A pray’r of love ascended
To the throne of love and light;
There her voice with music blended,
“Jesus, guide my boy tonight.”

Jesus, Savior, pilot me
Over life’s tempestuous sea!

3 When I awoke from dreaming,
Scenes of old seem’d strange and new;
My heart grew warm and tender
To my mother fond and true;
Tho’ her sweet voice has vanish’d
And her pray’rs ascend no more,
I can hear the songs repeated,
Songs she sang to me of yore.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
