Så går en dag än från vår tid

Representative Text

1 Så går en dag än från vår tid
Och kommer icke mer,
Och än en natt med herrens frid
Till jorden sänkes ner.

2 Men du förblifver den du var,
O Herre, full af nåd!
Och våra nätter, våra dar
Du tecknat i ditt råd.

3 Trygg i din vård jag lämnar mig,
När solen från oss flyr;
Och gladligt skall jag prisa dig,
När dagen åter gryr.

4 Men om det stilla dödens bud
I denna natt jag hör,
Det är min tröst, att din, o Gud,
Jag lefver och jag dör.

Author: Johann Friedrich Hertzog

Hertzog, Johann Friedrich, LL.D., son of Johann Hertzog, diaconus of the Church of the Holy Cross, in Dresden, was born at Dresden, June 6, 1647. After the completion of his legal studies at the University of Wittenberg, he was, from 1671 to 1674, tutor to the sons of General-Lieutenant von Arnim. The only hymn by him which has been translated into English is:— Nun sich der Tag geendet hat, Und keine Sonn mehr scheint. [Evening.] Fischer, ii. 129, says that, according to the testimony of Hertzog's brother, this hymn was written one evening in 1670 while the author was still a student at W… Go to person page >

Johan Olaf Wallin was born at Stora Tuna, in 1779, and early displayed his poetical powers. In 1805, and again in 1809, he gained the chief prize for poetry at Upsala. In the latter year he became pastor at Solna; here his ability as a preacher was so striking that he was transferred to Stockholm, in 1815, as "pastor primarius," a title for which we have no exact equivalent. In 1818 he was made Dean of Westeras, and set about the task of editing a revised hymn-book for the whole of Sweden. This task he completed in 1819, and published it as, Den Swenska Psalmboken, af Konungen gillad och stadfästad (The Swedish hymn-book, approved and confirmed by the King). To it he contributed some 150 hymns of his own, besides translations and recasting… Go to person page >
