We ask for donations here just twice a year, and this is one of those times. So, before you hit the "close" button on this box, would you consider a donation to keep Hymnary.org going? Even small amounts help, and they also let us know you're behind us and support what we do.

Last month, our Hymnary website had almost 1 million visitors from around the world: people like you who love hymns. To serve our users well takes money, and we have limited sources of revenue. This fund drive is one such source.

You can make your tax-deductible contribution by sending a check to Hymnary.org at 3201 Burton SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546, or you can click the Donate button below. From the entire Hymnary.org team, our grateful thanks.

Sortnet var den gyldne Sol

Representative Text

1 Sortnet var den gyldne Sol,
Da min Frelser rolig
Gud i Vold sin Aand befol,
Som en Søn fortrolig.
Saa skal jeg i Jesu Navn,
Hvad end før jeg frister,
Sjælen lægge Gud i Favn,
Naar mit Øie brister.

2 Da det sidste Suk han gav,
Hele Jorden bæved,
Klipper revned, og fra Grav
Døden sig da hæved.
Gjør hans Suk det Underværk,
Hvad da Hersker-Tonen!
Er paa Korset han saa stærk,
Hvad da ei paa Thronen!

3 Lær os Frelser, Livets Væld,
Hvad din Død betyder,
Saa vi til dit Kors med Skjel
Nagle vore Lyder!
Lær i Aanden os at saa
Grædende herneden,
Saa du Lovsang høste maa,
Naar vi fare heden!

After leaving the university he took to teaching; first in Langeland, then (1808) in Copenhagen. Here he devoted his attention to poetry, literature, and Northern antiquities. In 1810 he became assistant to his father in a parish in Jutland. The sermon he preached at his ordination, on the subject "Why has the Lord's word disappeared from His house," attracted much attention, which is rarely the case with "pro… Go to person page >
