Anna Ziegler Hess was born in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She was a housewife with seven children and she also wrote many poems. Two of her poems, "O Lord, help me to live," "The time is short, the season nears," appeared in the 1874 Brethren of Christ hymnal Collection of Spiritual Hymns.
