Davis grew up in White RiÂver JuncÂtion, VerÂmont, and by age 15 was an exÂpert telÂeÂgraph opÂerÂatÂor. He atÂtendÂed St. JohnsÂbuÂry AcadÂeÂmy and gradÂuÂatÂed from DartÂmouth CollÂege, HanÂoÂver, New HampÂshire, in 1889. With the aid of a felÂlowÂship from HartÂford TheÂoÂloÂgicÂal SemÂinÂary, he earned a PhD in LeipÂzig, GerÂmaÂny. He pasÂtored in SpringÂfield, VerÂmont; NewÂtonÂville, MasÂsaÂchuÂsetts, and New BriÂtain, ConÂnecÂtiÂcut. From 1909-29, he was presÂiÂdent of ChÂiÂcaÂgo TheÂoÂloÂgicÂal SemÂinÂary.
