1 When the night doth close the day,
And the darkness hither flies,
Gliding down its starry way,
From the portals of the skies,
Then the bright sun fondly, gladly welcomes it,
And the west is with the twilight glory lit,
Mingling in a softer ray,
Glories both of night and day.

2 To my heart the lesson plain
I will take, with grateful joy;
And if trial, grief or pain
All my faith and strength employ,
Then the sun within my heart shall welcome it,
And my soul be with diviner glory lit,
Mingling in a purer ray,
Joy and pain, like night and day.

3 And as dies the fading day
With a splendor not its own,--
Both the midnight and midday
Mingling in the setting sun,--
So when death comes shall my spirit welcome it,
With a glory both of earth and heaven lit,
Mingling in one perfect ray,
Life and death, like night and day.
