1 Where we oft have met in gladness,
On the holy Sabbath day,
Now we gather in our sadness,
Mourning over one away:
Tears are falling
On this holy Sabbath day.
2 One we loved has left our number,--
In the narrow dwelling laid;
There to rest in dreamless slumber,
Till the trump that wakes the dead:
When the angel
From their slumbers wakes the dead.
3 But while we in sadness gather,
Mourning thus for one away,
Lo, the angels say, "Another
Joins our holy song to-day!"
Weep no longer;
Join with them the sacred lay.
4 Let our grief, then, turn to gladness,
As we praise the saving love,
Which o'er every shade of sadness
Sheds the light of joys above:
Grief dispelling
By the light of joys above.
