Composer: Mari Ruef Hofer

Born: July 18, 1858/9, Littleport, Iowa. Died: December 31, 1929, Bakersfield, California (she died while traveling by train from Los Angeles, California, to Portland, Oregon). Hofer was educated at the Mt. Carroll, Illinois, Seminary and the University of Chicago. She taught music in the public schools of La Crosse, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; and Rochester, Minnesota. She also taught at the Pestalozzi-Froebel Teacher’s College, Chicago; the University of California, the University of Georgia, and the University of Tennessee, and managed musical programs for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.
