Alfred Arthur, born of American parentage near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, oct. 8, 1844. He studied at the Music School, Boston, singing under B. F. Baker, pianoforte under George Howard, and brass instruments under Matthew Arbuckle and Henry brown; and at the Boston Conservatory harmony and composition under Julius Eichberg. After singing tenor in the Church of the Advent, Boston, two yaers, he settled in 1871 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a teacher of vocal music and leader of the Germania Orchestra. He was a member for a few months of the choir of Trinity Church in that city, and later of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, where he remained until 1878, when he formed the Bach Choir of the Woodland Avenue Presbyterian Church.
