Daniel Taylor Cockerham was born in Olla, Louisiana in 1911. In addition to working on the family farm, he drove vehicles in the construction trade, but also found time to attend singing schools and eventually attended the Stamps-Baxter normal school in Dallas. He was the organizer of the Stamps-Baxter Harmony Boys Quartet, and served several years as Secretary of the Tri-State Convention. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
