Tune copyright statement

The tune copyright statement of a hymn is the copyright statement of that hymn as it is listed in hymnal. It has historical value, value for knowing what we can display, and value for our users.

  • Include the copyright symbol or "Copyright," but not both, or simply "By permission of..."
  • There is no need to copy the statement exactly from the hymnal. All we need to know is the date, any renewal information, the copyright holder, and the administrator. Do not include "Used by permission" because it implies Hymnary has requested permission from the copyright holder, rather than the hymnal publisher.
  • Include what pertains to the tune (not the text), if there is more than one copyright for the text, such as for a translation, or for two authors, put each statement on its own line.
  • If you know the tune is now in the pubic domain add "Now Public Domain" in the tunr note field.) For hymns published in the U.S. anything published/copyrighted before 1923 is public domain.)
