44. This Is My Friend's Most Precious Art

1 This is my friend's most precious art
And thus His grace He does impart:
He leads me down steep paths of woe
Yea, through dark valleys I must go;
And then through His eternal might
He turns my darkness into light.

2 Then I can say it is His grace
Which He has shown in wondrous ways.
Then I will kiss His loving hand,
My cares will fade at His command.
Each cross I now will gladly bear,
For I trust Him who placed it there.

3 I know His will is always best
Although my heart is oft distressed
And in despair cries out to God:
O Lord, my Rock, forsake me not.
Then all my fears He will erase
And I His holy name will praise.

4 Through this my faith in God will grow;
His word in me great strength will show.
I will be cleansed and purified
Through Christ, who for my sins has died.
Thus fear and doubt will end for me--
The blood of Jesus sets me free.

5 Lord, such a faith bestow on me.
I pray increase my love for Thee,
I pray for strength and patience, too.
And when my time on earth is through,
Then bring me to that peaceful shore
Where I shall praise Thee evermore.
