6. Arise my heart, turn to thy Lord

1 Arise my heart, turn to thy Lord
And joyous sing to God adored
As shades of night now vanish
From slumber deep your body wakes
And so your soul for Jesus sake
Shall sin and sorrow banish.

2 Behold how with morns early dawn
The whole world wakes in readiness
Its song to God it raises
For fair Creation that he makes
Its joyous effort undertakes
To spread our Father's praises.

3 From whence comes sloth and sluggishness
Which only thou, my heart, express,
Which only thou art feeling?
O be not thus as beasts untaught,
Since in God's image thou art wrought
By God--His light revealing.

4 O Lord help us that this weak light
Now struggling through the dark of night
May evermore shine brightly
And may it be that in our hearts
Thy Truth erect a House of Prayer
That in its Light we find thee.

5 The parched earth now Thou dost renew
With Thy refreshing gift of dew,
And flowers spring in beauty.
When Thy free grace bedews the ground
Of my own heart, there too are found
The blooms of love and duty.

6 This day I pray thee Lord of Light
May I be pleasing in Thy sight
And all my life's endeavor
Haste Thee, that great Eternal day
When o'er all things Thy glorious ray
Will blaze in joy forever.
