How vain the precaution! the signet is broken;
The watchmen in terror have fled far away.

2. Praise to the Conqueror; oh, tell of His love!
In pity to mortals He came from above.
O who shall rebuild for the tyrant his prison?
The scepter lies broken that fell from his hands;
His dominion ended, the Lord is arisen;
The helpless shall soon be released from their prison.
