177. By this Shall all Men Know

1 By this shall all men know that ye
Are my disciples, when they see
Your fervent love which well ye bear
To one another in God's fear.

2 "'Tis my command I give to you;
Where'er ye be, whate'er ye do,
See that ye one another love,
And thus that you are Christians prove."

3 So spoke the Lord of earth and sky
Before He died and rose on high;
Let ev'ry one the message know,
And ev'ry heart with love o'erflow.

4 In vain shall we with written creeds,
Or self-exalting words or deeds,
Display our fealty to the Lord;
For only love fulfills His word.

5 Love is of God and purifies
The heart, and selfish conduct dies
A thorough death of lasting shame,
When burns among us love's sweet flame.
