Text: | My heart was oppressed |
Author: | Rev. J. H. Martin |
Tune: | [My heart was oppress'd with the burden of sin] |
Composer: | R. M. McIntosh |
1 My heart was oppress'd with the burden of sin,
I felt conscious guilt, and deep sorrow within.
I sighed for relief, for forgiveness and peace,
That God would in mercy my spirit release.
Refrain:
I longed for His grace,
Oh! I longed for His grace,
I longed, how I longed, for His mercy and grace.
2 Encompassed with darkness, no light could I gain,
No comfort and hope of salvation obtain.
It seemed that in vain were my tears and my pray'r,
That I was forsaken, to sink in despair. [Refrain]
3 But glory and thanks be to God for His grace,
He shone on my soul with the light of His face.
He granted me pardon, He filled me with rest,
His love shed abroad, and sweet peace in my breast. [Refrain]
