H39.II. Honour to Magistrates

4 Eternal Sov'reign of the sky,
And Lord of all below,
We mortals to thy majesty
Our first obedience owe.

5 Our souls adore thy throne supreme,
And bless thy providence,
For magistrates of various name,
Our glory and defence.

6 Where laws and liberty combine
To make the nation bless'd;
There magistrates with lustre shine,
And States are govern'd best.

7 Nations on firm foundations stand,
While virtue finds reward;
And sinners perish from the land
By justice and the sword.

8 To magistrates be honour paid,
To laws obedience shown;
But consciences and souls were made
To be the Lord's alone.
