238. Holy, Holy, Holy!

Text Information
First Line: Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Title: Holy, Holy, Holy!
Author: Reginald Heber (1826)
Meter: 12 12 12 10
Language: English
Publication Date: 1997
Scripture: ; ; ;
Topic: God: Holiness; Praise: God, The Father
Source: Hymn Tune & Service Book, 1879 (alt.)
Notes: According to John P. Wiegand, the editor of Praise for the Lord, the 1879 text alteration was made by a Unitarian publisher who edited the final line of the first stanza to remove the original reference to the Trinity. The Fillmore Brothers found this hymn in that Unitarian hymnal and introduced the hymn to the Restoration Movement churches, apparently unaware of the alteration (see this example from Fillmore's New Christian Hymn and Tune Book, 1882, which has an indication that the words are altered but uses the alteration and not the original words). This alteration thus persisted in some hymnals of the churches of Christ. - Garrett Herndon
