17. Light of those whose dreary dwelling

1 Light of those whose dreary dwelling
Borders on the shades of death!
Rise on us, Thyself revealing--
Rise and chase the clouds beneath.

2 Thou, of heaven and earth Creator!
In our deepest darkness rise;
Scatter all the night of nature,
Pour the day upon our eyes.

3 Still we wait for Thine appearing;
Life and joy Thy beams impart,
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every week, benighted heart.

4 Save us, in Thy great compassion,
Oh, Thou mild, pacific Prince!
Give the knowledge of salvation,
Give the pardon of our sins.

5 By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Every burdened soul release;
Every weary, wandering spirit
Guide into Thy perfect peace.
