48. Not Far From the Kingdom

1 Not far, not far from the kingdom,
Yet in the shadow of sin,
Lo! many coming and going,
But few are entering in.
Not far, not far from the gateway,
Why art thou standing in wait?
And fearing boldly to enter,
Though it may soon be too late.

Refrain:
Not far, not far from the kingdom,
Then why not enter today?
So near, yes, “almost persuaded,”
Oh, come, come while you may.

2 You hear the strains of sweet music,
That floats so sweetly along;
You know the song they are singing,
Yet joining not in the song.
You catch a glimpse of the beauty,
You share a part of the light;
Yet weary, lonely, you’re waiting
Out in the desolate night. [Refrain]

3 Out in the darkness and danger,
Out in the storm and the cold;
Yet Jesus waits to receive you,
And bring you into his fold.
Not far, not far from the kingdom,
Why not in Jesus repose?
’Twill soon be late and forever,
The door of mercy shall close. [Refrain]
