880. Treasure in Heaven

Remember, man, thy birth;r /> Set not on gold thy heart;r /> Naked thou cam’st upon the earth,r /> And naked must depart.r />

This world’s vain wealth despise;r /> Happiness is not here;r /> To Jesus lift thy longing eyes,r /> And seek thy treasure there.r />

If profit be thy scope,r /> Diffuse thy alms about;r /> The worldling prospers laying up,r /> The Christian laying out.r />

Returns will not be scantr /> With honour in the high’st;r /> For who relieves his brethren’s want,r /> Bestows his alms on Christ.r />

Give gladly to the poor,r /> ’Tis lending to the Lord;r /> In secret so increase thy store,r /> And hide in heaven the hoard.r />

There thou may’st fear no thief,r /> No rankling rust or moth;r /> Thy treasure and thy heart are safe;r /> Where one is, will be both.
