202. The Promise is for Me

1 I used to hear the promise,
That Christ would save from sin,
And bring his love unbounded
Where evil long had been.
I did not doubt that others
This blessedness could see,
But long my heart had questioned
That the promise was for me.

Refrain:
But now I see
The promise is for me;
It is no more for others
Than it is for me.

2 I knew that Christ had purchased
Salvation full and free,
And willed that all his people
Should be as pure as he.
And tho’ I asked for cleansing
Whenever I would pray,
I dared not claim his promise
To purge my dross away. [Refrain]

3 I marveled when another
Would shrink before the foe—
Why should he not to battle
With courage boldly go?
But if my spirit faltered
When evil hosts were nigh,
What more could be expected
Of one so weak as I. [Refrain]

4 How long have I been cheated!
But now I claim my right
To have what has been promised,
And Satan put to flight.
In Jesus’ name I’ll conquer,
My heart shall be as snow;
For what he does for others,
He will do for me, I know. [Refrain]
